Legislator Supports Restricting Social Media Access for Students

Jakarta City Council Commission E Member, Abdul Aziz supports the Jakarta government's plan to develop policies restricting social media access for students.

Very supportive, yes

This step is expected to prevent students from accessing radical content after the explosion incident at SMAN 72 Jakarta.

"Very supportive, yes. Besides content that promotes extremism, there are also pornography and sensitive content related to religion," he expressed, at City Council building, Friday (11/21).

He assessed, digital access blocking is the government's authority. Therefore, he hoped that this policy could protect the mentality of the younger generation.

"Parents can't fully prevent their children from accessing those things. It might be monitored at home, but outside, it's no longer under our control," he explained.

Further, he also believes that restrictions should be implemented by the central government through the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi). "This is for the future of our nation," he added.

He cited, some developed countries have restricted access for minors to sensitive content on social media to prevent misuse and to ensure national security.

"We also need to have the same regulations. Sensitive content or content related to criminal activities should be blockable by the government. We must prevent our teenage children from accessing it, as it could be misused and potentially disrupt the nation's resilience and security," he stated.
